Wow! I don’t want to give too much away for people coming in for the first time but what an awesome experience it was to be with Bruce and his family at Human Nature Hunting. The course is thoughtful and well laid out and pushes, but never forces, you out of your comfort zone. I am an out of shape office worker and while there was one section that was physically strenuous there was nothing that was impossible. Bruce was encouraging without coddling and helped everyone, no matter their experience level find their own successes with patience and good humor. The food was also amazing. 10/10 I’ve had the absolute best time and wish I could do it over again.
HNH is a lot more than just a course and Bruce is a lot more than just a teacher. It’s a chance to join a community of humans dedicated to stewardship of land and awakening one of our most authentic ways of being: the way of the hunter. You’ll learn about the philosophy, planning, shooting, archery, field dressing, butchery, and many other aspects of the craft. Most importantly you’ll spend days in breath-taking country, with authentic people, eating delicious food, hosted by a beautiful family. You‘ll leave a hunter and a fuller human.
Awaken the Hunter with Bruce McGlenn was an incredible experience. Doing it alongside one of my closest friends—who I hadn’t seen in over five years—made it even more special. Being immersed in the Washington wilderness, learning hands-on skills, and reconnecting to nature and where food truly comes from was powerful. Field dressing and butchering the goat was a real highlight. Eating that same meat throughout the week made the process tangible and meaningful. For me personally, there was an emotional journey in witnessing the taking of a life and honoring it by turning it into food. We were also well fed with amazing meals throughout each day, all prepared by Jim, the chef during the whole experience. I successfully hunted my first squirrel, got in some rifle practice, and was introduced to the basics of tracking. I also connected with others who were on their own journey to learn more about hunting, which added to the sense of shared purpose and depth. Bruce is a deep, present, and grounded teacher. It was a gift to learn from him and to also meet his lovely wife and daughter. If you’re looking for a real, holistic introduction to hunting, this course delivers.
Human nature hunting is an incredible experience! Bruce is an experienced and welcoming hunter who takes everything seriously from the philosophy of hunting to all the practical details. I went from not being sure if hunting was something I was capable of to thinking it’s something I absolutely want to get more into. What’s more is the food prepared by their onsite chef was amazing, and everyone that was supporting the program was very friendly and helpful, it felt a lot like joining a family for a little while than it just being a class. I can’t recommend this program enough!
Awaken the Hunter is a wonderful experience, challenging the participant physically, intellectually and emotionally. It is as much an invitation to rethink how to relate to food and where it originates as it is a thorough exploration of the process of hunting. Bruce (the instructor) demonstrates how hunting is more a way of life than an activity. Covering preparation, gear choice, location selection, setting up camp, tracking & stalking, marks-manship, field dressing, skinning and harvesting an animal, the course provides the participant with the basic skill to journey into the wild alone or with a group. Bruce teaches with competence, knowledge and patience. The staff (including Bruce’s partner Sarah) are welcoming and generous and the meals around an evening campfire are a delicious way to debrief from the day. Highly recommend if you are interested in learning to hunt or even curious as to what hunting is all about. The course leaves you feeling hunting (when approached respectfully and ethically) is more an act of giving and receiving than conquering and taking.
