My family loved our stay here! We stumbled on this place on our way out to the Black Hills. We loved it so much we came back on the way home and even extended our trip an extra two nights! Our kids absolutely loved the ranch animals including their guardian dog Copper, cows, goats, horse, and chickens. They spent the afternoons catching bugs, frogs, and toads, and playing at their little playground. We even walked the gravel road a bit to see neighbor cows and horses, too! After dinner, we watched the sunset on the most beautiful horizon. We stayed in the cabin, which was warm and well stocked. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. We had the nicest neighbors in the cabin next to us. I believe the owners of this place really try to keep the atmosphere clean and family friendly while also giving the rugged feel of camping. It was really perfect. We would definitely come back and will be recommending to friends and family. I also plan to follow them to watch how they grow an evolve over time!
My boyfriend and I stayed for one night at a small family-owned homestead, and it was absolutely adorable. They had teepees, cabins, and a spot for RVs! They were extremely nice, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. We even got to meet their working dog “Copper” and he was a big sweetheart :) We stayed in a cabin, and it was perfect. Clean, comfy, with beautiful sunsets to end the night, what more could you ask for? I would absolutely recommend it to any couple or family.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the badlands and the Heritage Guest Ranch! My kids were happy to have Copper the watch dog stop by our tipi :) Bathrooms were clean, and it was just a short drive to get to most of the trail heads. Would recommend to anyone wanting to try a tipi experience.
We stayed here from 6/5-6/7. They had spacious sites with water and electric and a very nice view. Its a cute little ranch. Nice clean bathrooms / showers and a great location. I also liked that there was a guard dog. I only give a 4 star versus 5 because of someone else's experience, I would have handled it differently but I guess rules are rules and it is important read and understand expectations. I would suggest adding in the terms that arriving after 6 means completely forfeiting your reservation. But overall it was a great stay. *review edited. I felt bad for not giving 5 stars* there's always 2 sides of a story. Thanks for your kind response.
Heritage Guest Ranch is a hidden gem near Interior, South Dakota, just minutes from Badlands National Park. Though only a couple of years old, this family-run campground already feels like a special place. The property is small, private, and intimate—perfect for those who prefer a quieter camping experience. It offers a few RV hookups, three teepees, and two beautiful cabins crafted with South Dakota pine. The woodworking inside the cabins is stunning, and the handmade, country-style décor in the bathrooms adds a rustic charm. The bathhouse is modest (two shower stalls and two toilet stalls), but it was clean, functional, and met our needs—even when a large group arrived on our last day. Our cabin was cozy and well-equipped, with bunk beds, a microwave, mini fridge, coffee pot, soap, dish tub, towels, and dishes provided. The water is potable, so we were able to drink straight from the tap and use it for washing dishes. Mattresses are included, but guests should bring their own bedding, pillows, and blankets. For those who like extra cleanliness, I’d recommend packing disposable towels or sanitizing wipes. Since August is one of the hottest summer months, expect very warm conditions. It finally cooled down on our last day, but I recommend checking the weather ahead of time and planning for unexpected shifts in temperature—especially if you’ll be camping in a teepee or tent. There is no WiFi on-site, as the owners encourage guests to unplug and recharge. If you have strong cell service, you may be able to message or scroll briefly, but the real joy comes from disconnecting—whether that’s reading a book, enjoying the outdoors, or exploring nearby activities (we went rock hounding and loved it!). Staying here stirred up fond memories of my childhood camping trips with my dad, pulling a camper behind the Suburban and walking to KOA bathhouses. It felt like a true return to simple, authentic camping—close to nature yet comfortable. One of the highlights was meeting the owners, who were warm, knowledgeable, and eager to share their family’s deep roots in the area, including a proud history of military service, law enforcement, and organic agriculture. Sitting around the campfire with them was an unexpected gift and added so much meaning to our stay. We also enjoyed seeing other campers experience the teepees—what a neat option for those wanting a more rugged, sleeping-bag-on-the-ground kind of adventure. For most, though, I’d highly recommend renting a cabin for comfort paired with rustic charm. Overall, Heritage Guest Ranch is a wonderful balance of simplicity, history, and hospitality. If you love quiet campgrounds with character and heart, this is a place you’ll want to return to.
