I did my first hunt this year in early November of 2017 it will not be my last. After that initial hunt i plan on doing many more. Over the past 25 years i have taken more Bucks than i can count or remember. I have had some amazing hunts in my lifetime. But nothing compares to my single day with Larry’s Son Dan. That morning we might have seen 20-30 doe’s roam all over 3 very large food plots and we saw a few 120 inch but still very impressive bucks. We took a break around noon and went back to the lodge to get some great home cooked lunch. We returned to the shoot house around 2pm. Just minutes after sitting down we had the largest 6 pointer i have ever seen about 200 yards away. 5 minutes after that an enourmous 8 pointer that was well over 200 lbs and a solid 120-130 inch range was 150 yards from me and got as close as 60. After watching those two good bucks walk around 7 doe had accumulated in my main food plot that was off to my left. This is when my hunt got real hot. I saw a doe take off and watched her for a few minutes when out of the wood line came a giant big bodied Whitetail who could easily be labeled the king of the Forrest. He chased that doe around the main food plot for about an hour and every 15-30 minutes new bucks had arrived in the field. At this point i felt like i was on TV because 120inch and bigger bucks were everywhere. Larry’s Son Dan had been eying the lone buck with his Bino’s but he was out a good 300 yards. Dan had guessed he was 140-150 inches but said he could be as big as 160. The deer continued to roam the food plot and started inching over in my direction. He came to 180 yards and froze broadside looking over his shoulder when Dan gave me the green light and i put a single round through both lungs. The monster ran 70 -100 yards and crashed along the field edge in a hedgerow of golden rod with his tines towering over the blades of golden grass. We let the deer set for 30 minutes and continued to watch the bucks up on the hill in another food plot chase a couple of hot does. This is where the best part of the hunt occurred. As we were approaching my trophy. Off in the distance we watched a similer buck to the one i just shot chase 5 120 inch bucks off those doe’s. Less than 100 yards away from us 5 studs with thick creamy wide beams were bounding in sync with one another. It was an amazing display of how a dominant buck acts in early November during the rut on a cold November night in New York State. Once upon my giant we counted 14 points and measured him at 153 inches. He was definitely worthy of the wall and of the label “Trophy whitetail”. The only part of the hunt that was disappointing was going home after a single day and not being able to see the other bucks perform early rut. I can’t wait for next year to come. It was without a doubt the best hunt i have ever been on. It did cost me some money. But it was worth every penny. I will be booking a hunt with my daughter this year for a doe so she can see why we love this sport. Then booking another for my 69 year old father who has spent his lifetime chasing the elusive whitetail teaching me all i know aboutt this amazing creature. Hopefully giving him something similer to what i have expiranced.
