White Horse Hill National Game Preserve

Beautiful Fish and Wildlife site. The auto tour, White Horse Hill, and the animals makes it a worthwhile stop if you are in the area of Devils Lake. Only negative is the the visitor's center isn't open very much. A few notes: 1. There is an accessible trail about a quarter mile long with signs for children. Best way to hike is clockwise. 2. All the trails, save for the overlook, start near the visitors center. 3. There is not much parking by either the Devils Lake or White Horse Hill overlooks. But both are worth waiting for. 4. Preserve includes both elk and buffalo/bison. I have stopped by twice and the most recent is the only time I spotted either (and luckily caught glimpses of both!) 5. As with other wildlife refuges, there is an automatic gate the prevents entry during "off hours".
Crazy to think this rando place in ND was one of the first National Parks in America, formerly Sullys Hill. It's pretty scenic for ND and has a nice short wilderness drives, some trails, and overlooks. The place is quite small for a reserve and you only need maybe 2 hours here. Giant visitor center that's only open seasonly on the weekends 12-4 unfortunately.
My wife and I loved it!! Definitely worth checking out if in the area. We drove around a bunch until we saw the bison. BUT shame on whoever was aupposed to work the visitors center as they NEVER opened!! So sad.
Love the fall trees. I'm a local in devils lake and let me tell you if your looking to see bison, prairie dogs, and more wild life or go on a hike this place does not dissapoint
Beautiful area with a rich history. Worked here for the summer and learned so much about ND, Devils Lake, Bison, Elk, and Monarch caterpillars/butterflies, met hundreds of wonderful people from around the world, and became an amateur birder. It was a terrific experience that I'll never forget.
