We saw a heard of Mouflon Rams and even an African Dung Beetle while exploring this insanely wild area. The hike to the top of Pu'u Ahumoa (Chicken Hill) is definitely the crown jewel of the experiences here. The view from the top of this 7,000 foot extinct cinder cone is probably the best on the island!
It’s a beautiful spot if you go at the right time. The only thing is a because it’s up high in elevation is that it rains constantly. Secondly due to the high elevation it can be difficult to breathe if you’re not prepared or thinking it can be something quick and easy
Beautiful and wide open landscape.
Great views of the Mauna Loa eruption from Saddle Road.
This isn't really a destination. It's just a place you drive through on your way to somewhere else. It is a beautiful place to look at until you get used to it. Then it just becomes miles of lava field. For fun, look for sheep and goats as you drive through. You will see the occasional sign for donkey crossing but you probably won't see donkeys any more. They finally got the wild donkey population under control.
