Honua‘ula Forest Reserve

This reserve spans over 8,500 acres of 3,000 foot elevation cloud forest on the slopes of the still active volcano, Mt. Hualalai. Two units are bisected by a residential area and the smaller tract of land contains the immensely popular Makāula-'o'oma hiking trail. Hunting and hunting with dogs is permitted throughout both units. The cool and moist climate fosters the growth of towering Hapu'u ferns as well as native Ohia and Koa trees. Ginger species provide dense forest undergrowth. Three species of native song bird and a species native hawk also call this area home.

Nice easy hike. You can choose different paths to shorten your hike if you want. Som of it is just an old dirt rd and some of it is dense fern jungles. Mostly shaded but some sun too.

Fairly arduous uphill and downhill paths with some flat roads connecting. Beware of the tree roots!
