I hunted moose with Scott's team in 2022. I paid to go on an adventure with a professional company. The hunt was set up with great gear, knowledgeable guides and took place in world class territory. During the hunt I saw Wolves, Dall Sheep, Black Bear, and several Moose. I shot a great bull on the last evening of the hunt before we had to go back to base camp. 65" wide a true Alaska Trophy! My guide Jake and packer Cody along with the other guide in camp, Jake, worked their tails off to get everything off the mountain in time to get the super cub back to town. The work ethic of these men was refreshing to see! Scott is blessed to have such hard working, professionals representing Alaska Summit Guide Service. In the end Scott delivered on a World Class Adventure. I am grateful to you and your Team Scott!
This past August (2019) I flew to Alaska to hunt for Dall sheep with Scott McRae's Alaska Summit Guide Service and took an old Dall ram. This success was a lot more about Scott's outfit and guides then it was about any of my efforts. I really just pulled the trigger and made the shot. My guide was responsible for putting us in the right spot on the right ram and that was what made this dream hunt a success. Pre-hunt Scott gave me all the particulars and encouraged questions adding advice about pre-hunt preparations as we discussed hunt details a number of times. When I put the deposit on the hunt it would be my first guided hunt for any animal. Fast forward to arriving in Anchorage a couple of days before the hunt where I had a gear inspection by Andrew, one of the guides, to make certain my gear was properly selected for the rigors of mountain weather and back country travel. Fortunately, I adhered to Scott's "equipment list" and had no issues with gear. I met my guide, Zack, just before we flew out to the Alaska Range. Fortunately, for me, this guy is determined to get his clients into big old rams. In fact, his goal of taking animals that are 10 plus years old sounded like we were going to a great spot. He had seen three that met that criteria on a previous hunt so I imagined there was one with my name on it. Dropped off by Super Cub somewhere on the Kuskokwim river system, Zack and I made first camp on the edge of a stream bed where we immediately started to glass for the night. We spent the next two days working up the stream bed gaining elevation and negotiating walk-a-rounds to get past stream barriers while looking for sheep. Nothing particularly hard but constant effort and our share of alders, and steep climbs. Zack was an expert at this but I was deliberate and consequently slow, much slower in fact. Despite this, my guide tolerated my pace well and provided some tips for me to make my way on the steep unfamiliar hillsides. About mid hunt, on our way toward the top of a mountain to peer over into some bowls where Zack was confident there were sheep, we spotted rams on our side of that ridge well down from the top. After hunkering and glassing the rams, Zack instructed me to stay down and still while he got some elevation to identify them. He returned about an a half hour later with instructions to move when commanded while he watched where the two rams were looking. With his help I managed to get below their line of sight unspotted and Zack followed. At that point it was a waiting game in the steam bed until the rams fed out of sight to our left. Zack was sure to mention the shot would be longish based on our position and where the rams would appear. Once they were out of sight it was finally game time and I was told to make tracks ASAP so we could gain a position to ambush the one shooter ram in the group. As we made our way in haste climbing up the mountain side Zack turned to me and said "This ram is dead!". At that point I was certain we would get a shot. Minutes later we were on a low ridge coordinating the shot, Zack on my right and three feet to my rear within ear shot for instructions to ensure we positively ID the shooter and get off an accurate shot. The rams came up a crease heading to ridge top crags for bedding the night, the shooter leading the way. We were set, range at 466 yards confirmed, ram quartering slightly away. First shot spotted just over his back but good wind, second shot, after an in reticle elevation adjustment, hit perfect and the ram was down in two seconds. Zack was elated and I just took in the whole experience, relieved! We congratulated one another and made for our packs left behind to begin the work. Zack was all about breaking the ram down getting the meat cooled and cape cleaned. Expert work, making it look easy. The next morning, after grilled sheep for breakfast, we headed out, reaching our base camp after another night's camping half way back. My take-aways; Its all about the guide, be in shape and always, always follow rule #1-Listen to your guide!
After seeing Scott McRae on a popular hunting show I decided to book a hunt with Alaska Summit Guide Services and wasn't disappointed. The weather was unpredictable but after a few physically and mentally challenging days Scott called in a nice trophy moose which I shot at 43 yards. The Alaskan landscape was beautiful and the experience was awesome. Scott was a great guide and definitely knew what he was doing. I'm in the process of planning my next trip back to Alaska so I can fulfill my next dream kill, a big Brown bear. I will definitely be calling Scott again. This was truly a "Once in a Lifetime" hunt. Thanks Scott for a great hunt.
i have hunted with Alaskan Summit Guide Service and Scott McRae twice and can’t wait to hunt with him again. The country, equipment, people, gear and hunting were all amazing. Scott and his guides work hard to make sure you have the hunt of a lifetime. Scott and his team will do their part, show up in shape, shoot straight, pray for some favorable weather and Alaskan Summit will do all they can to make you successful.
I booked a moose and grizzly bear hunt in 2019. Overall I thought my trip went very well. I saw moose, dall sheep, and Grizzlies on this trip. I harvested a bull moose with a 65 inch spread, will score very high. I didn't get a grizzly, but I saw several while hunting. I would highly recommend Scott Mcrae, professional and gives a great effort for his clients. All three moose hunters got great bulls! The people working for Scott Mcrae were also great, Eric 👍Jake👍were awesome. Thanks, Conrad Wilson
